One-of-a-kind Tutoring for One-of-a-kind Students
Since 2008, I’ve supported hundreds of students, across grade levels, subject areas, and skillsets, to help them build confidence, achieve their educational goals, and become more engaged learners.

Expert Tutoring in New York City
With students at all grade levels falling behind in key academic subjects, personalized attention is more important than ever. Declines in reading comprehension started even before the pandemic and math scores are sinking, too. Tutoring by Maryann offers a spectrum of educational activities to help kids and teens catch up and keep their skills sharp including one-on-one tutoring, a virtual resource hub, a YouTube channel, and virtual classes for parents and students. Primarily, I offer virtual and in-person tutoring in the New York City area.
Testimonial
“We'd previously worked with other tutors. After just a few sessions with Maryann my daughter not only felt well supported, but also knew that she'd learn a lot with her. As my daughter says, Maryann is very thoughtful and very good at breaking down concepts to help you understand every aspect. On top of her terrific skills, Maryann is also calm and kind. It was so easy to have her in our home (or pivot to remote) and we really enjoyed interacting with her.”

My Story
Hi! I’m Maryann. I provide individualized attention to address whatever learning barriers your child might be facing: ADHD, anxiety, a lack of confidence (or motivation), and anything in between. I’ve developed personalized curriculum to help students below grade level catch up and to give advanced students academic enrichment. Whether it’s an in-depth geometry review or perfecting analytical writing, I’m always excited to work with all kinds of students on their unique challenges.
I’ve tutored kids and teens in New York City for 15 years. In that time, I’ve worked with over 150 students in one-on-one sessions, small group settings, and classrooms, teaching everything from test prep skills and study habits to the five-paragraph essay and the quadratic formula. My expertise spans age groups, subjects, and abilities, though I most often work with seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth graders providing math help and English tutoring in both writing skills and reading comprehension. I know how to adapt to student needs, and I get to know my tutees. Cultivating a trusting and collaborative relationship is just as important as how I teach and the homework we do together.
I have worked for large education companies, nonprofits, and small tutoring businesses, but shifted to freelance tutoring so I could create a comprehensive educational experience. Tutoring by Maryann is about collaborative learning and long-term client relationships. Here, you’ll find a resource hub for students and parents and accessible group workshops to cover topics like NYC high school entrance exams, homework tips, and math, writing, and reading help. These are in addition to my one-on-one math and English tutoring and executive functioning coaching services.
Working one-on-one allows me to get to know each client and figure out what they need to excel in the NYC school landscape. I have the pleasure of watching a student grow from week to week and getting to know their learning habits, interests, and challenges, all of which inform how we shape each lesson and, eventually, the school year.
Beyond my hands-on teaching background, I have a BA in psychology, with honors, from New York University, an MFA in writing from Sarah Lawrence College, and I’m pursuing an MS in counseling and expressive arts therapy in Prescott College’s low-residency program.

When students need help in a specific subject area, general homework support, test prep tutoring, or to get caught up in school, I work with them individually. I work with students at all levels, including those with learning differences. My expertise spans grades, subject areas, interests, and abilities. I have helped students with receptive language and expressive language disorders improve their reading skills, and I’ve tutored many students with ADHD to help them keep up with math. These sessions cost $175 per hour.

In addition to subject-based tutoring, I offer executive functioning coaching to help develop skills like good organization habits, time management, and critical thinking. When students are struggling across subjects, having a hard time staying on top of homework, need organization help, or just looking to develop more effective habits, I can provide support in one-on-one coaching sessions. We would typically spend less time on individual homework assignments and focus more on implementing strategies together. These sessions cost $175 per hour.

I also teach virtual workshops covering common frustrations, like essay writing, test anxiety, and math. Workshops are limited to 12 students to allow time for questions. Occasionally, I offer group enrichment workshops in areas like public speaking and creative writing. Workshop listings change throughout the year and vary in price. Usually, they cost about $50 per student.

Parents are a part of the equation for academic success. But school probably looks a lot different now, so I offer coaching and workshops for parents to cover basic subject area review and to explain the skills and strategies I teach students. These sessions are $175 per hour, but I also offer group workshops for $70 a person.

Tutoring in New York City and Online
I offer virtual and in-person tutoring in the New York City area. Working next to a student in the same room is the strongest way to build connection and retention of information, but face-to-face in a videoconference has advantages, too. I am equally adept at tutoring in person and online, and I can build a plan to meet your needs. For clients located in and around NYC, I can provide in-home tutoring or meetings at a coffee shop or library.
While I sometimes offer written feedback for students who are advanced writers, or who have been working with me for a long time, learning tends to happen on the spot. To best serve my students, I need to sit with them as they work through a math problem or revise their writing. This way, I can ask about their thought process and correct errors as they happen, rather than pointing things out after the fact. If a student is making the same mistake throughout an assignment, they will learn much faster if we address it the first time they make it rather than if I send them notes on a draft three days later.
The virtual nature of work has made tutoring—both online and in person—more collaborative. Students can share their work with me via Google docs, or we can share screens while in a Zoom session so that we can work together in real time. The internet has also created an abundance of tools (some helpful, some less so) to help kids improve their understanding of math, grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills.
On the other hand, there are far more distractions than there used to be. This is why my conversational, on-the-spot method is important to the learning process.
Testimonials
What makes Tutoring by Maryann different?
Tutoring by Maryann is a highly personalized tutoring and coaching service offering in-person and virtual lessons in New York City, online workshops, and educational resources for students in grades 2 through 12.
Unlike large tutoring companies, I am an expert tutor with a decade and a half of experience, rather than a revolving door of college students.
I am knowledgeable of the New York City school system and New York State education standards, and I know how to prepare students for a range of standardized tests. I also help students reduce test anxiety.
I provide students and parents with educational support, tools, and strategies for success. My parent coaching services equip caregivers with skills to help their students excel in and out of the classroom.
I use my skills as a counselor in training to help foster a welcoming, nonjudgmental environment where students feel empowered to take charge of their own academic progress.
I take a person-centered approach to meet my clients’ unique needs rather than a rigid educational methodology.
I simplify complex problems and offer multiple learning methods so students with different strengths can find what works best for them. I offer one-of-a-kind tutoring for one-of-a-kind students.
Online Education Resources
Tutoring is expensive. You are paying for someone’s time, years of experience, subject-matter expertise, location, and ability to build rapport. I understand that most parents can’t afford long-term, weekly tutoring. But closing education gaps and helping every student succeed is important to me, so I also offer online classes to help with standardized test prep, test anxiety, common math problems, and English skills. These are usually priced under $60 a student and they provide a range of tips and strategies. While every student is different, many learners face common sticking points like:
How to do math word problems
The best ways to study for a test
How to deal with fractions and decimals
Understanding linear functions
How to write a strong thesis statement
Writing good research papers
Applying to New York City High Schools
Preparing for state tests and Regents exams
I also have free videos and blog posts covering many of these topics.
Parent Coaching
One of the biggest gaps I’ve noticed in tutoring companies is the lack of parent support. Whether it’s understanding the lattice method of multiplication that you’ve never seen before in your life, or wanting to help your child stay organized, parents are an integral part of student achievement. If you taught your kid one new vocabulary word each day and used it in context as often as possible, they’d have 30 new words every month and more than 300 in a year. By the time the SAT rolls around, they’ll be in great shape without much effort.
To cover this gap, I offer one-on-one parent coaching to caregivers of my tutoring students. These are run just like a tutoring session. They focus on the same topics as your student so you know what’s going on. I also offer classes for parents to help kids stay on top of their homework, get organized, and study. Parents can also use my free video and blog posts to understand important topics and translate complex concepts for their children.
Benefits of Tutoring
One-on-one attention is an excellent way to help students improve grades, catch up, increase their test scores, learn new skills, develop executive functioning, and better understand challenging concepts. In a class of twenty or thirty in a New York City high school, it isn’t feasible to double-check that every student understands everything before moving on. Tutoring allows ample time to address individual questions and challenges. Hiring a tutor, and choosing the right tutor, is a big decision.
An often-overlooked advantage of tutoring is the positive impact of the tutor-tutee relationship. The biggest change in my students is their level of confidence. One hour a week with the same tutor provides consistency, builds trust, and shows a student that they are valued. Shy students often become more comfortable working one-on-one and are more forthcoming when they don’t understand something. How often do adults feel nervous to speak up in a large meeting because they don’t want to be the one that doesn’t understand a project? No one wants to be the person slowing things down. A trusting relationship with a tutor can alleviate fears, and sometimes even encourage kids to share more in the classroom.
